Athlete Spotlight – Samantha Arrington
The Athlete Spotlight is meant to introduce you to members of our community you have yet to meet. If you have met them, you might just find out something new or something you have in common! The Athlete Spotlight series will run in conjunction with blog posts so look for these every other month or so.
Our Athlete Spotlight for May 2018 is Samantha (Sam) Arrington!
What class do you regularly attend?
I go any time between 6:00 AM – 11:45 AM and sometimes 4:30 PM (editor’s note: you can also find Sam on Saturdays with her daughter!)
What do you do for a living?
Pharmacist
When did you start CrossFit?
August 2014
What is your favorite movement and why?
Thrusters because it’s a compound movement and I like being able to work several areas of my body at once.
What is your LEAST favorite movement and why?
Burpees. Even though it’s a compound movement there’s something about being face down and getting back up. But in another sense it’s like life. We don’t like to fall but we have to get back up again and move forward.
What is your biggest CrossFit accomplishment?
I think finally getting pullups, because I was so determined not to use those bands. I would get so aggravated with pulling them down and almost cause myself to get a leg cramp pulling down on the band. It was my biggest incentive to stop using bands.
What were you most afraid of when you started CrossFit?
Heavy weights because I didn’t know much or have as much training about proper form. But once I learned better form I felt more comfortable with heavier lifts. There are still times when I get in my own head but I think we all do that.
What are your fitness goals for this year?
I just want to continue to work on getting stronger and more importantly get stronger using proper technique and form.
What is your “why” for doing CrossFit? Why do you keep coming back?
I started doing CrossFit to work on building better muscle tone and getting better at lifting, along with being able to maintain some cardio. I keep doing CrossFit because I continue to see results and I always have something I can work on to make me stronger. There are aspects of CrossFit that I can apply to my life and it makes me want to continue to keep coming. I’ve gained such a great community of friends and built such great relationships that I never thought I would get from just going to any old regular gym.
